The forced aspect is upon punishment of imprisonment if payment was not made.Forced loans during this period were used to finance the Navy for the expected arrival of the Spanish Great Armada. This was a tumultuous time in English history as Charles I had just surrendered to the Scottish army and was being held at Anderson Place in Newcastle as a prisoner.
