King Charles I
1642 (April) letter from York, signed at top "Charles R", with integral address panel reading "To our right trusty and well belovd Cosin John Campbell" "The Earle of Loudoun Lord Chancellor of our Kingdome of Scotland".

The letter "confirm[s] and renew[s] for lyfe our first grant of joint secretary to our Master of Requests wherein as wee are led by necessity of that service and warranted by the reghts of our croune and acts of Parliament and Counsel (as we have wrott in our answer to our concells letter) so wee expect that not only yee append our seale thereto without delay but that yee will upon all occasions countenance and approve this our right and privelege, as being no ways prejudiciall to eny act of our late Parliament as is expressly mentioned in the grant.", requiring Loudon to "append our great seal thereunto that it may be useful to him according to our intention wherein not doubting of your care and conformity to this our pleasure wee bidd you farewell".

An important document with relevance to the relations between Charles and Scotland - Charles signed a Treaty to abolish episcopacy and made Loudoun - a past Covenanter - Lord Chancellor of Scotland.
