King Charles II
1650 (18 July) letter signed "Charles R" (aged just twenty) from Falkland with integral address panel reading "To the Marquis of Argyle".

Letter reads: "I desire you to use your interest with the committee of estates to give the command of the horse to be raised by the second leavye in this countye to the Lord Rothes, as a person likeliest by the Power he has here to give the speediest and best as[sistance in] that work, both for the good of my ser[vice and the] State: and likewise being invighted to de[viate less] from an assurance that there is a very good [friendship] between you and him"

The letters and words in squared brackets have been filled in in pencil where paper has been lost and carefully added. Rare and important.

Notes: Charles II had arrived in Scotland from the Netherlands in June 1650 and was aware of the importance of securing the support of men such as the Marquis of Argyll. He had already acquiesced to Argyll's insistance on Presbyterianism, his demand to denounce his mother and father, but had and would continue to dodge having to marry his daughter. He was ultimately successful in gaining his support of course and when, in January 1651 he was crowned as King of England again at Scone, it was Argyll who crowned him.
