King Charles II
1657 (10 Jan.) warrant signed at top "Charles R", "Given at our Court at Bruges", reading:

"Wee are gratiously pleased in regard of the Expence, and Charge that our trusty and wellbeloved servant Sir Ed[ward] Warlker Knight Our Secretary at war shall bee at in the Execution of the said Place and for his Encouragement and reputation to assigne under him and his Clarke the severall hereunder menconed to be received of all the respective officers under named for their severall Commissions ..."

Beneath which are two columns.

The first is headed "To himselfe *** Partaken"
For every Collonels Comission *** 20

For every Sgt. Major *** 11
for every captain *** 6
for every lieutenant *** 3
for every Ensigne *** 3

A most unusual form of document in exile.


Notes: Sir Edward Walker (1611-77) travelled with King Charles II into exile and served as his Officer of Arms and Clerk of the Privy Council.
