The Darien Company banknote
(1707) A 19th century "pull" from a printing plate for the Darien Company promissory note "for the Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies".
A complex situation whereby Scotland wished to establish an overseas trading company to rival England, but suffered from English protectionist legislation.
An expedition was launched after 1695 that landed at Darien on the isthmus of Panama on the Gulf of Darien. A settlement was established there, but failed after William III, King of England and Scotland, decreed that this Scottish company was not to be traded with. The Darien affair cost approximately 40% of Scotland's wealth and forced negotiations for Union with England.
Upto 1698 the Darien Company circulated banknotes but none were recorded until 1977 when three examples were found printed on 19th century paper, this being one of these surviving pulls (24x10.5cm)
