John Barkstead - Regicide
1655 (3 Dec.) letter signed from the Tower of London with integral address panel reading "These to his Honoured Friend Coll. Clerke Present". Letter reads: "I formerly wrote unto you touching the offences of twoe souldiers under my comaund relateing to one Cox, a shipp chaundler neere the Tower, since which time I have been informed of your proceedings against ye ship chaundler, & for that ye souldiers have ever since remained in prison. I desire to know by this Bearer Ensign Brunsdon whether you intend any thing further against them or to leave them to their tryall at a Court Martiall here ...". Signed "Jo Barkstead".

Some foxing though perfectly sound and a rare signature.

Notes: John Barkstead (executed 1662) served as Governor of Reading and of Yarmouth, and in 1652 became Governor of the Tower. On the restoration he fled to Germany, but was arrested in Holland and executed after trial in England on 19 April 1662."
