Lord High Treasurer Warrant
1677 An excellent example of a Lord High Treasurer's warrant produced for Ralph Montague, "Ambassador to the Most Christian King" for the sum of £762.2s.6d.

The monies raised were to be used for the payment of expenses incurred during Montague's trip to Paris to join King Louis XIV. These expenses are contained within the document on a separate piece of paper, which is then signed by Montague.

The warrant is signed by the Lord High Treasurer, Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby (later Duke of Leeds). The signature was made at Wallingford House, the residence of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who was a mentor to Danby.

Danby and Montague, although Anglicans (they assisted in the marriage of William of Orange and Mary), they facilitated bribes from Louis XIV to Charles I for Catholic advancement in England. Louis XIV disliked Danby and, in 1678, paid Montague to expose this to court, causing Danby to be imprisoned at the Tower of London.
