The Balance of the Collection - Royalists
1641-1678/9 a selection of eight letters:

1641 (31 July) ALS from William Byng with integral address panel reading "To his Honerd Friend Captain Collins at Moats Bulwark Dover" asking for the admission of "one of my four soldiers in Jenkins his room the last sworn man into Deal Castle" and that "Mr. Ambrose" be schooled by him as he sees fit "whom the last week from Sunday night till the Monday following never appeared at the Castle"; also mentioning that the "Queen Mother takes her journey into these parts upon Tuesday next, the first night comes to Dartford, the second to Cobham, whither the King and Queen bring her. The next night to Sittinghbourne and eight nights she stays at Canterbury".

1641 (21 Dec.) ALS from James Wilsford with integral address panel "To his much respected friend Captaine Collinze" requesting a warrant to "cource in the Warren for which I am come purposely from Canterbury".

1645 (8 Feb.) ALS from Giles Baurtilet, laid down on card to "Mr. Hill" reading "Ye times as so bad yt I can hardly had livelihood out of my livening for myself and my family by reason of so great taxes and quartering of souldiers dally yet I will sell such goods as the souldiers have left me ... I have bin plundered by ye souldiers but go willing I wil pay you y eonies selling such goods as I have left between this and Whitsuntide".

1643 (10 Feb.) copy of commission to Lord John Stewart, 1st Earl of Traquair, appointed General of Horse "in ye west and southern parts".

1660 (9 Oct.) ALS from Laurence Hyde, Earl of Clarendon to Charles Seymour with address panel pasted on reverse reading "I am requested by my tenant of Haring Farm to send a particular of my estate ... to you whether my estate or title to be the greater".

1664 (28 Nov.) long ALS from Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Canterbury from Ludlow Castle with integral address panel "To my very loveing freinds Ye Deputy Lieutenant for he County of Carnarvon in North Wales." endorsed "Hast Hast". Letter discusses the raising of a militia, requesting provisions of horse, foot and arms and the financial levy which is supposed to have been raised for that purpose.

1670 (2 Dec.) LS from Sir Geoffrey Shakerley to Sir Gilbert Ireland, MP for Liverpool discussing tactics for the selection of a second MP, with Ireland's response on reverse.

1678/9 (3 Jan.) ALS in English from Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington with integral address panel in French reading "A monsieur, Monsieur La Chivalier Richard Bulstrode Resident du Roy de la Grand-Breittaigne a Bruxsells" asking for employment in the hope he can be useful to him, with postscript reading "You have the newes of [?] distractions here from better hands which makes me silent".
