King Charles I
1642 (21 December) letter from "Our Court at Oxford" signed "Charles R" at top with integral address panel reading "To the Reverend Father in God Our Right Trusty and Welbeloved John Lord Bishop of Snt. Asaph" [John Owen].

Letter instructs Owen to hand the tax received from the clergy to Orlando Bridgeman " ... with severall great affaires highly concerning oure service: in the discharge whereof hee will have occasion to use great sumes of money", promising that "wee shall give you such further discharge under our great seal or otherwise, as shall bee sufficient for your indemnity".

Despite some foxing in fine condition and unusually with contemporary filing endorsement on address panel reading "Charles R 21 December 1642".

Notes: Liked by Charles I, Owen suffered at Parliamentarian hands. on joining the petition of the eleven Bishops in 1641 he was impeached for high treason in the Tower. The following year his land was sequestered as episcopacy was abolished .

Sir Orlando Bridgeman served an important role in the early days of the Civil War and was tasked with discussing country-wide peace with the Parliamentarians after the indecisive battle of Edgehill. He would later assisted in the withdrawal from Ireland and would become Lord Chancellor to King Charles II.
