The Balance of the Collection - Parliamentarians
1640-57 a superb group of nine letters or documents:

1640 (15 Sept.) ALS from an "affectionate kinsman" to Edward Lord Fairfax asking for help with stables and lodgings when Holles and Lord North attended the King at York.

1641 (14 Aug.) letter signed from James Chaloner (Commander) to his Uncle, Lord Ferdinando Fairfax with reference to Lord Holland's "carriage of business" regarding the "debate on coverting the disbanding of the armie"

1645 (12 Dec,) ALS from John Rushworth in Tiverton to Fernando, Lord Fairfax regarding the provision of the garrison and reporting that "the enemy is fortifying upon ye river I hope there shall within a few days to be no manner of access into the town without permission."

1647 (5 Jan.) ALS from Thomas Fairfax to the High Sheriff and Gentlemen of the County of Brecon regarding the "disbanding of supernumerarys ... upon payment of the same, you doe expect to have your county exempted from free quarter"

1641 (23 Dec.) long ALS from Edward Martin, Dean of Ely to Mr. Jos[?] Beaumont - contents of a religious nature complaining of the "rude dirty carriers that travel even upon xmas day". Ex the Wellburn collection.

1654 (8 Aug.) ALS from Edward Montagu to Lord Brudenell with integral address panels offering the services of a man "a Catholique and a measure of lands" to settle a land dispute.

1655 (27 Aug.) long ALS from Nathaniel Fiennes to the Commissioners of the Navy at Whitehall explaining that his cousin Jephson, having taken a ship to Ireland, is now separated from his Chattels".

1657 (8 Feb.) ALS from John Thurloe (Spymaster) to Major General John Desborough regarding instructions for the despatch of letters - "blanks are likewise left for the names of the commanders and ships", with integral address panel, inlaid.

1658 (1 March) letter signed from Henry Cromwell (son of Oliver and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland) to the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy carried by Captain Richard Cowse explaining that he is worthy of a better ship.
