1797 February 27 Printed declaration issued in the name of the Bank of England that the Bank has been ordered to suspend payments in cash "in consequence of ill founded or exaggerated Alarms", following news received two days prior of a farcical landing of a few French invasion troops on the Welsh coast, causing panic and confusion, resulting in a Cabinet meeting instructing the Bank accordingly. The prohibition was intended to last for six months after the end of the war but was not repealed until 1821 (17x30cm, minor tear to the top)
