King Charles I - Preparing for the Civil War
1642 (18 Sept.) letter from "our Court att Stafford" signed at top "Charles R" with integral address panel reading "To Our trusty and Welbeloved Our Mayor of Our Cittie of Chester" (either Thomas Cowper or William Ince, both of whom had an overlapping year in office in 1642, though most likely the former who had been a supporter of the Royalist cause).

Letter reads "Trusty and wllbeloved wee greet you well. Whereas wee have resolved to make our repayre to our city of Chester on Friday next these are to will and require you to warne all the trained bands of that our cittie to be in readiness and give their attendance on us at our entrance into the same. And to take care that necessary provision bee made for entertainment of us and our retinue so not doubting of your diligence herein wee bid you heartily farewell".

A dramatic document in further evidence of the growing concern over the every growing likelihood of Civil War.

In very good condition with only minor paper loss along folds, intact wafer seal on the reverse, and a rare, dramatic document.

Notes: In the months preceding Edgehill, the first conflict in the Civil War, Chester was to be a most important stronghold for the Royalist forces as the principal port for Ireland and a gateway to Royalist North Wales. In addition, the city held a predominantly royalist clergy including refugees from Ireland.
