1831 (24 Jan.) Autograph letter written from Naples by Charles Scott (1805-1841) to his father the novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford, Melrose, Scotland, with postal markings. Scott jnr was with the British Embassy in Naples, he writes of his diplomatic prospects and refers to his father's declining health, suggesting "If Ann could persuade you to lay down yr. pen and consent to be idle...it would do yr health more good than Abercrombie and all the Doctors of Edinr. and London". Charles Scott informs his father of his own health, the social life in Naples and the popularity of the young King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. He comments on the instability in Europe and predicts "we shall have a general war but I know not how soon". (With supporting background information)
