Viscount Mansfield to Thomas Fairfax - Horsemanship
1627 (29 Feb.) letter from Edward, Viscount Mansfield in Welbeck to Thomas, first Baron Fairfax York in which Mansfield explains that owing to "Mu staye [in London] being very unsertayne dependinge uppon the parliment makes me the bolder to make an offer & renewe an olde acoustemed sute of truckinge the Comodetye of Horsefleshe &c, the rather because I have harde your Lo:s saye thatt you have plenty of mares butt no Horses, & destitude att this time off a Stallion. Therefore Iff itt please your Lo:s to Aceptt off my Baye Barb: Though for no other use butt a Stallion. I hope he will fitt thatt turne to your Lo:s Contentment & the better Iff you please to lett him runn with them. When I returne from London your Lo:s must nott denye me a Jurneye hether to see summ horses though nott worth your Lo:s Trouble to bringe thatt Noble Gentleman your Grand Childe mr Fayrfaxe with you whoe I heare whoe I heare to my great Contentment is mutch adicted to that exsercise...”. Notes: Both men were avid horsemen and shared this love together, despite later being opponents in the Civil War. When, on restoring Charles II to the throne with Monck, Sir Thomas Fairfax's reward was that the King should ride a chestnut brown horse from the Fairfax stables at his Coronation"
