Robert Devereux, Third Earl of Essex, Parliamentarian Soldier
1624-44, two commissions and one letter signed:

Undated commission to George Trotter, appointing him Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment of foot under the command of Sir Matthew Boynton.

1642 (30 July) commission appointing Edward Wood a lieutenancy in the regiment of foot under the command of Sir John Meyricke.

1644 (20 Feb.) letter signed to Prince Rupert answering his request for a pass for Sir Arthur Aston "for the recovery of his health" - he had succumbed to gangrene, his leg amputated and replaced with a wooden one - and declining.

All documents signed "Essex" and in good condition.

Notes: Devereux has an interesting history as a soldier with mixed success; having previously fought without distinction in the Low Countries and under Sir Edward Cecil in the failed English Expedition to Cadiz, he fought for the Parliamentarians in the Civil War and was lauded for his relief of Gloucester and occupation of Reading in 1643. His career ended with defeat to Royalist forces in Lostwithiel from whence he escaped by fishing boat."
