Monck, George Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670)
1660 Vellum document with superb paper seal upper left, signed "Albemarle" at the foot, appointing Francis, Lord Newport to be Governor of Ludlow Castle and Captain of a Company, issued during the reign of King Charles II.
General Monck was a major military figure from the start of the Civil War and as Commander in Chief of the Parliamentary Forces from November 1659, enabled the restoration of the monarchy in May 1660.
