The War of Jenkins Ear
1739 Manuscript declaration over two pages signed by Dr Sebastian De La Quadra at Pardo, as "Counsellor and first Secretary of State of his most Catholick Majesty and his first Plenopotentiary for the Convention which is treating with the King of England" in order to resolve a dispute involving the supply of slaves to Spanish South America and to send an annual trading ship.
Jenkins, a ship's captain, had appeared before the House of Commons alleging that in 1731 the Spanish had searched his trading ship as a result of illegal British trading and cut off his ear, which he produced in evidence. British merchant vessels were being seized. The Treaty referred to in this document served to end this practice (of seizing the ships) and Spain was to pay £95000 in compensation (16x20cm)
