1737 An order of the Exchequer recording the receipt of £146.16s paid to Sir Theodore Jansen, a wealthy Anglo-French merchant, profiting from the South Sea bubble.

The money was for the payment of £130 to John Walton for “His Majesties Free Gift and Royal Bounty.” This transaction is interesting as not much is known about the activities of Jansen after being fined £50,000, following the South Sea bubble bursting.

Jansen signs on the reverse of the document, alongside his son Stephen. The document is also signed by Sir Robert Walpole, in his capacity as First Lord of the Treasury, and Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington as the President of the Privy Council.

Interesting document with good signatures, excellent condition. (28 x 24cm)
