1745 (19 Dec.) Autograph letter from James Mathias with address panel to John Campbell, the Cashier of the Royal Bank of Scotland at Edinburgh, with a London bishopmark, discussing the financial consequences of the Jacobite Rising following the rebels' retreat from Derby. Mathias, the Secretary of the Equivalent Company refers to the financial uncertainty and approves of the Royal Bank's decision "of not lending". Further fears that "the Rebells may possibly once more get to Edinburgh ... and paying you another unwelcome visit". (With supporting background information)
