A Spanish Queen for England?
1614 Treasury warrant for the cost of transporting a present to Spain, signed by the Earl of Suffolk (Thomas Howard) and Sir Julius Caesar, a distinguished judge, both Lords Commissioners of the Treasury.
The warrant instructs "John Goodwin M(aster) of the Ship called Sovereign of Ipswich...hired and employed for his Majesty's service to transport the present sent by his Majesty unto the King of Spain for w(hich) service we have agreed to give unto the said Goodwyn the sum of seven score pounds...".
King James I was intent on securing suitable marriages for his children and with this in mind he proposed marriage between his son, the future Charles I, and the Infanta Maria, daughter of Philip III of Spain. Filing endorsements on the reverse (18x22cm), with an accompanying slip dated 23 September 1614 signed by both Suffolk and Caeser requesting one hundred pounds be paid "for the last present sent by his Majesty into Spain" (19x8cm).
