Admiral Sir George Cockburn (1772-1853)
c1820 Front of envelope addressed and signed by Cockburn lower left, charged 3d postage to an address in London "12 James Street / Buckingham Palace", with an engraving of him laid down to a part album page. Cockburn directed the capture and burning of Washington during the 1812 war. In August 1815 he was aboard HMS Northumberland that conveyed Napoleon to St Helena, where he remained as Governor for four months. An uncommon signature (2)
