Breviary Leaf
1464 Double sided parchment page written in Latin from the Lucca Breviary, once a 464 page personal breviary, which was broken up in 1938. Page has certain letters in coloured ink, and a pencil annotation "German 1464" at the foot of the rear page. This missattribution has been observed on other leaves.
The Lucca breviary was produced by the scribe Karolus de Blanchis de Bardano, with the exact date of completion recorded on a now missing colophon; 18:00, 22nd December 1464.
This page contains the compline (the night prayers) which would be performed at the end of each day by the owner of the book. They include passaged from Psalms such as Psalm 17:8 at the top of the page, "Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege nos" (hide me in the shadow of your wings). It also includes the phrase "Salva nos, Domine, vigilantes, custodi nos dormientes: ut vigilemus cum Christo, et requiescamus in pace." (Save us, Lord, while waking; guard us while sleeping, that we may watch with Christ and rest in peace).
