The Byron Family - Garrison of Carlisle Castle
Two letters from Sir Nicholas Byron (1596-1648), son of Sir John Byron (1560-1623), and one letter from Sir John Byron (1599-1652), son of the same John.

1640 (12 Jan. ) autograph letter signed by Sir Nicholas Byron at Carlisle addressed simply "For Yourself" giving receipt of notice that "A thousand pounds for the payment of the Garrison" has been sent, though he "wish it had bene a great er sume in regard I have accordinge to you disire propounded your motion to the Captaines about paying their companyes untill you scond supply shall come whom I find very willing to the atterment of their powes but I feare will prove nothing they being themselves out of moneys which if they could make good by creditt yet here is none able to give them, the place being soe exctremley poor there four you shall so well to take notice there of." Signed "N Byron".

1640 (12 Jan.) autograph letter signed from Carlisle, addressed in the same manner, to a "Mr. Walker" (presumably Thomas Walker, Deputy Paymaster) bemoaning the lack of money to fund the Garrison and enquiring into the availability of credit to do so. Signed "N Byron" and with postscript reading "Mr. Walker I have borrowed on hundred and fifty pounds, as above mentioned. To be paid again ye 26 of this present to my Lord Bishop of Carlisle at London. Use your credit to save mint yet is engaged, to ease yours. N Byron"

1640 (28 March) autograph letter signed "J[ohn]" Byron to "Tho[mas] Walker Deputty Paym" authorising the payment of one month's salary to Thomas Penhouse, Clerk of the stores in the Garrison of Carlisle.

A very rare trio.

Notes: In 1644 the Parliamentarians besieged the Castle of Carlisle with the allied forces of the Scottish Covenanters. In the same year the Royalists lost at Maston Moor, York and Newcastle - a decisive year for the control of the Northern strongholds.
