1649-56, three petitions with:

1649 (3 Aug.) "To The Right Honorable John Lord Wilde, Baron of the Exchequer and Counell Digbye" from "Edith Snow and Margaret Davis Widow" explaining that, having both had sons and husbands slain in the service of the King and Parliament, they are both now destitute and request moneys that might have been sent to the slain. A remarkable and emotive document.

1650 (31 Oct.) to the "Consell of State att Whitehall" from Jonh Bingham and two other Dorset justices regarding Thomas Chafin and requesting permission for him to travel to London to settle his affairs, reading "we take the liberty to certife, that since the tyme of his composition for his deliquency in the first war he hath lived very peaceably at his habitation within this county and hath reddily conformed himself to all orders and ordinances".

1656 (7 Aug.) "To his Highness the Lord Protector" (Oliver Cromwell) from the "Numerous Creditors of ye confiscated persons in Scotland" . Stating "confiscated estates are not within a possbilitie to satisfie those vast debts ... Wherefore the petitioners most humbly implore your highnes just favour and tender compassion may be extended to soe many distressed people ... the petitioners being therby rendred capeable of a just and speedy releife ... and may have further cause to Blesse God" Signed "Hamilton" (William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk, 3rd Duke Hamilton).

Hamilton, a supporter of the Royalist cause and fined £1,000 by Cromwell in 1654 under the terms of the English Commonwealth's Act of Pardon and Grace to the People of Scotland. Hamilton married Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (1632-1716) who had had her estate confiscated by Cromwell for which the Duke spent many years trying to rebuild from their losses. It is understood that he did not do so until around 1660, just before he entered into political, public life.
