Oliver Cromwell
1648 (22 May) document issued at Staverton regarding moneys deemed to be owed by Mrs. Head for her late husband Mr. John Head who died having been wounded in the Battle of Dartmouth owing £3 to the surgeons who had tried to save his life. His widow, Mrs. Head had since been pursued and threatened to be arrested for the payment of this sum.

At the foot, Oliver Cromwell has signed "O Cromwell", under an autograph note reading "Releife Mrs. Head". Additional signatories are Itatestor Johes Horsham Vic:, Simon Worth, John Maye (Constable), Hugh Horsham, Allan Searle and Herny Cole.

Document laid down on attractive collectors page of the kind seen in the 19th century; most unusual and giving rare insight into Cromwell's signature.

Provenance:
Brightwells, 13 November, 2019 where it was suggested that the document had descended through local family of Leominster, Hertfordshire

Notes: Cromwell would not come to power as Lord Protector until late in 1653
