Philosophy of Life
1795 Autograph letter written by James Landon, from Cork Abbey, Bray, County Wicklow, to a Miss Rose at Kilravock Castle, Nairn, North Britain (Scotland), franked by J. Killalla with a Dublin circular Free postmark. The lengthy intellectual letter reads "... the Mind must be instructed before it can be improved, & interested before it can be amused ...", and provides a sustained philosophical treatise on reading, education and self improvement, mentioning the emotional and aesthetic effects of music, the advantages of reading and concludes by suggesting a three part reading curriculum.
Landon was clearly known to Miss Rose as he apologises for cancelling a summer visit to the Scottish Highlands. An important guide to the cultivation of intellect in the 1790's. (With supporting background information)
