The Cartagena Expedition
1714 (23 May) Entire autograph letter from Margam signed "Mansel" by Thomas, 2nd Baron Mansel (1719-1744) to Monsieur Clephan in Livorno, with London bishopmark, PD circular handstamp and "pd in 4" postal charge.
Mansel refers to travel in northern Italy, the "forcing of the harbour of Carthagena by our victorious Admiral", the death of Lord Beauclerk and only "four hundred men out of the army and fleet" had been killed or wounded, and notes that "except in the Tyrol all the Mountainous countries abound with ugly women". The expedition ultimately failed. (With supporting background information)
