Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976)
1945 Cyclostyled Menu for a dinner held at "TAC. 'B' Mess" on 6th May 1945 two days after Montgomery accepted the German surrender from Admiral Doenitz at Luneburg Heath. The menu of six courses, has the date amended from February to May, and is signed in ink "B.L. Montgomery, Field-Marshal / 6-5-45", as Commander of the British Army of the Rhine. Together with a printed 27 page booklet titled "Lecture on Military Leadership given at the University of St Andrews on 15 November 1945" inscribed and signed on the inner front cover by the lecturer, Montgomery, to Tom Howarth.
With a Copy typed telegram dated 25 April '45 from the War Office headed "Personal and Secret from Prime Minister to Field Marshal Montgomery" on the death of his Aide de Camp, John Poston (1919-1945) and "the wounding of Peter Earle" in an ambush by German forces while returning to Montgomery's HQ at Luneburg Heath. Churchill pays tribute to the "marvellous service of Liason Officers, whose eyes you know and whose judgements you can exactly measure". The death of Major Poston was a great personal loss to Montgomery.
