Monmouth Rebellion
1684 (20 Aug.) autograph letter signed "Jsiah [?] Webb: Postmst; [Postmaster] in Gloucester with integral address panel reading "To The Honble The Principall Officers of his Majesties Ordinance att the Tower of London", also struck with "AV/22" Bishop mark on reverse.

Letter reads: "... Having Received an order from your Honour Dated 22nd July Last, To Take into my Custody the Armes of all Dangerous and Disaffected persons That have bine lately seized and Brought to our City of Gloucester. Uppon Receipt of which order I forthwith Addressed my selfe to the Deputy Lieutenants of our City & shewed our Honours Order, whose Answer was yet severall Armes had bine seized, and brought heather, but by order of his Grace The Duke of Beaufort our Lord Lieutenant, They were sent to Chepstow Castle."

Some paper repairs and address panel inlaid. An unusual and scarce letter.

Notes: It is thought that the arms referred to here were seized from the prisoners taken at the battle of Monmouth in which the Duke of Monmouth attempted to depose James II
