A large collection of various financial documents relating to the origins of deposit banking in London.

The collection consists of 15 documents from Clayton & Morris, the originators of utilising mortgages for loan security. Clients within these documents include the wealth merchants and landowners of 17th century London.

A further group of 17 documents from various early deposit banks across London are included in this collection. Clients served by these banks within these documents included the grandson of Jane Cromwell, the sister of Oliver, various bankers and goldsmiths.
4 documents from "the sign of the Three Crowns in the Strand" relating to the early history of Coutts.
9 documents relating to Gosling's bank, later a founding member of Barclays.
4 documents relating to the early operations of Irish deposit banking through Nesbitt Bank.
6 documents relating to the Stop of the Exchequer, all of which are deeds with the renewed 6% interest payments beginning in 1677.
4 early promissory notes created by various institutions for the payment of a sum of money on demand.
