Elizabethan Vellum Tax Documents
1600s A pair of tax documents in Latin on vellum, one from the reign of Elizabeth I (1601) and the other from the reign of James I (1608).

Both documents are from the Roll of the Pipe, used to record the payment of taxes levied for the raising of armies for the defence of the realm.

The 1608 document is for the payment of £40 by Robert, Baron Rich, which took 11 years for him to pay, possibly due to his involvement in the fighting at the Capture of Cadiz.

James I document excellent condition, while Elizabethan document is torn along edges, not affecting the text. (James I 27 x 22cm, Elizabeth I 35 x 23cm)
