Oliver Cromwell, as Lord Protector
1655 (20 Aug.) military commission on vellum signed "Oliver P" at top, appointing Roger Lawrence as an Ensign in a company of foot commanded by Captain Geoge Walton in General Monck's regiment. With wonderfully preserved paper seal and, on the reverse, filing endorsement reading "An Ensign's Commission from Oliver Cromwell to Roger Lawrence in Genll. Monks Regiment".

Some paper loss not affecting the written text; a dramatic document.
