King Charles II - Scotland
1653 (4 March) document signed at top "Charles R" "... by the grace of the King of Scotland England France and Ireland defender of the faith and to our trusty and right well beleoved cosine and counciller William Earl of Glencarne" appointing him "Commander in Chief of all Forces as well Horse as Foot already raysed in Our Highlands or in any other passes of the Kingdome; and to conduct and to lead them against the Rebells, or any who shall oppose Our service untill the time that Our said Leutenant Generall John Middelton shall arrive and give you notice of his being landed in that Our Kingdom... for the destroying and expelling the Rebells from thence". Given at "the Palais Royall in Paris".

Folded and with some light marking described when offered by Bonhams as "consistent with having been carried on the body during active service".

Notes: This document follows the Royalist Scott's defeat at the Battle of Dunbar and Worcester. It is thought that the King had appointed Glencairn a secret commission to divert the English from Scotland. Glencairn's role, then, was to remain in Scotland and lead the Scottish resistance to the English. When John Middleton was appointed his successor, and then Sir George Munro, divisions appeared in his army and he and Munro came to duel.
