George Ogilve - The Surrender of Dunottar Castle
1652 commission signed "George Ogilvie" reading:

"these gives full power warrant and commission to Sir Robert Grahame of Morphine Knight Baronet and Alexander Banerman of Alsik to goe to [blank] and their meitt with major general Deane or any he shall appoint haveing power and commissioune and giving up the house and castle of Dunoter upon honorable conditiounes for the use and service of the Commonwealth of England and what ever the said Sir Robert Grahame and Alexander Banerman shall doe conclude and end with the said Major General Deane of these shall be nominated and comissionat be him for that effect anent [?] the renditioune and [?] up the said house and castle for the use and service foir said ..."

Notes: Sir George Ogilvy, 1st Baronet was a Royalist military officer known for his remarkable defence of Dunnottar Castle which at the time held the regalia of Scotland, or so it was believed. It is thought that in fact Lady Ogilvy concealed them about her person and smuggled them out to the Church of Kinneff. Although he had been permitted to surrender the castle, he did not do so until favourable terms had been secured for his garrison, holding out the siege for eight months. His men were permitted to walk out of the castle honourably and return to their homes without impediment.
