Prince Rupert
1648 (9 November) autograph letter signed "Rupert" with address panel reading "For the Lord Craven" with two complete wax seals and silk ties common of letters between royalty and nobility.

Rupert writes to regret that he cannot answer his recipient in full as he is confin'd not to impart the resolution which are taken"; reassuring however that "I am not engaged farther than to set this fleet in a posture which as I believed the greater service now to the King, the treaty being not likely to come to anything of wich I have good assurances ... you will find that this resolutions was not soe rash as perhaps is seems to you".

Some paper loss which has been repaired and overall foxing, nevertheless a sound and important document.

Notes: At this time Rupert was in Holland commanding the Royalist fleet. It is likely that he refers in this letter to his plan to sail the fleet to the coast of Ireland to support the Marquis of Ormond who was rallying the Royalists.

Lord Craven was a loyal and wealthy supporter and benefactor of the Royalist cause.
