Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex (1591-1646)
1643 May 4, Military Commission appointing Edward Wood an ensign in Sir John Merrick's regiment, signed "Essex" at the foot of the vellum document.
Essex was Captain General of the Parliamentary Army. During the raging Civil War, Essex had besieged and captured Reading in April 1643, but was unable to advance on the King's headquarters at Oxford.
