John Bradshaw - Regicide
1649 (17 July) letter " Fiven at the Councell of State at Whitehall" signed "Jo: Bradshawe Psidt. [President]" to John Wallaston, Treasurer at war ordering the payment of £3,000 to Francis Smith for "two thousand four hundred quarters of wheat by him laden aboard thee ships now in the Thames for the Service of Ireland".

Also 1650 (4 Feb.) letter signed to Colonel Sydenham, Governor of the Isle of Wight enclosing a petition (no longer present) giving leave to Cardell Goodman, permitting him to "continue in that Island for the space of one month now to some notwithstanding their former order for his removal thence which we desire you to take notice of".

1650 (3 Aug.) letter signed to Colonel Sydenham on the Isle of Wight writing we "doe approve of what you have done as to those whom you have nominated to be officers in the militia ... as to that concerns' the Dutch ship with the eighty horses it will be fit you make stay of the same till the master of the ship shall give a better answer whither they are going."

A fine and rare trio.

Notes: John Bradshaw (1602-59) served as Judge during the trial of King Charles I and pronounced the death sentence himself as President of the Council of State. In this role he was, in effect, the Head of State and had ultimate power, displayed in the most dramatic way by sentencing the monarch to death.

His role was not forgotten on the Restoration and on the 15 May, 1660 it was resolved that Bradshaw (died only a year before, Cromwell, Ireton and Pride who had died prior would be attained and hanged in their coffins at Tyburn; their heads subsequently exposed in Westminster and their bodies reburied beneath the gallows.
