Letters to Prince Rupert
1644 (29 April) autograph letter from Dublin Castle signed "Ormonde" informing that "Capt. John Bartlet is arrived I hope within a few days to send over three hundred good men and well Armed, God send them safe passage for I heare the Par'mnt Ships are upon that coast" ... informing also that "there is little hopes for the present to bee suplyed hence with any considerable proportion of Armes or ammunition, but if I had meanes to keepe them [I would send them over]" comitting to send, as promised "6 iron pieces, but being ignorant what use your Highnesse may have of such for the defence of North Wales".

1643 autograph letter signed from James Crompton, Earl of Northampton at Banbury reporting on the position of his troops at Warwickshire: "to looke out towards Warwick-castle, and secure some part of ye country from ye rebells, the Prince of Wales his regiment havinge received orders to bee at an houres warning, and to get provisions to bring along with yem" relaying also that Captain Hopton of Croker's regiment tore a warrant sent by Northampton's brother, Charles Crompton, saying that "none should be obeyed there but his Collonell" and complained about Croker's threat to drive away his tenants' cattle "for hee hath in mt fathers time allwaies strived to quarter himselfe where hee might bee most prejudiciall" recalling that Croker had once "threateneth to blunder my tenants to morrow".

This letter is referred to by C.V. Wedgewood as "an example of how Royalist officers, who paid their own troops, found that their tenants were being so mulcted by others that they could not pay their rents, and the understand on both sides that surplus was fair game, but not livelihood.".

1649 (3 Jan.) autograph letter signed "Rob;[ert] Long" (laid down) informing that he "sent James Casaubon ... the first draught of your highness commission and instructions and a copy of Lord Jermyn's commission, with all which I am confident he attends your highness either at Rotterdam or Helpford sluice ... if there is another letter to be procured from the former directed our highness about the duke of Yorke, concerning which I will wait upon you to reqyre your directions and shall, in all thing appear". An interesting letter with information on the conveyance of letters.
