Forced Loans
1590s A group of three Elizabethan forced loans, handwritten on paper, which obliged the recipient, "By the Queen" to pay a fixed sum to the Crown which would be repaid without interest in an undefined period of time. The forced aspect is upon punishment of imprisonment if payment was not made.
Forced loans during this period were used to finance the Navy for the expected arrival of the Spanish Great Armada. The documents also recorded the repayment of the loans and the receipt of the money.
All three documents in good condition. (22 x 21cm to 29 x 19cm)
