Francisco de Miranda (1750-1816)
1798 Autograph letter in French, signed "de Miranda" by the Venezuelan military leader and revolutionary who fought in the American and French Revolutionary Wars and the Spanish American Wars of Independence. Written to one Joseph Smith from Clifton, near Bristol while he was travelling in England, he reports his arrival at Bath and then "we spent the day exploring the area around Clifton, which I assure you, is delightful, and my health is improving". He enquires whether Smith has received "Turnbull's book on ancient painting" and refers to "Tableaux de la population de l'Amerique". One page, with a transcription and translation (19x23cm)
