Oliver Cromwell
1649 (26 March) letter signed "O Cromwell" with autograph insertions reading "Whereas I am enformed that Mr. Cardiac of whtsteed in Suffolk, hath suffered very much, by having many horses taken violently away from him, without any just authority these are therefore straightly to command all officers of soldiers, that they do [not] presume upon sight hereof to take any horse or horses from the said Mr. Cooke without special authority from [the General Committee of Parliament or] mee, as they will answer the contrary at their uttermost peril."

The text in squared brackets is in Cromwell's hand.

Letter with non-contemporary note at foot, some paper damage and inlaid. Rare and important.
