M.K. Gandhi (1869-1948)
1930 Autograph letter written in English to an unidentified correspondent, signed MK Gandhi, all in indelible pencil, from Sabarmati introducing Reginald Reynolds, a young English Quaker who lived in Gandhi's ashram at Sabarmati from 1929-30. He was involved in the Salt March and the 1930 civil disobedience campaign. In March 1930 Gandhi appointed Reynolds to deliver a statement to the Viceroy explaining the reason for this campaign. Reynolds, wearing khaki and a sun helmet was advised by the Viceroy's secretary that his actions would violate the law and endanger public safety.
The one page letter in faint but legible handwriting reads:
"Dear Friend,
This is to introduce a young English friend Reynolds who has come to India in a spirit of purest service. He has no one of his own to mind him and he holds views that may startle even the most advanced nationalist.
Yours sincerely
MK Gandhi"
