King Charles I - Preparing for the Civil War
1642 (July) letter from York signed "Charles R" at top with integral address panel reading "To Our Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Cousin and Consellor Robert Earl of Lindsey Generall of our Forces now on Foote in ye North".

Letter reads "We have seen your letter of the second of the month and the enclose from Collonell Hildyard and approve very well of the order you have given for drawing the cannons and ammunition from Paul to Beverley whither Wee wish you should Retire the fforces that are there. On Thursday next we have appointed the Gentlemen of this our County to attend us therre and then we shall resolve of some course so to dispose of the fforces with you as may be most for the security of this County against the attempts of Sir John Hotham and his Adherents; and on ffriday next you shall receave the Resolution that we shall take therein. In the meanhwile wee will that you remaine at Beaverley with the fforces you have and reserve there with you onelys so much of Our Ordnance and Munitions as shalbe requisite for your defense...".

A very significant document in the months preceding the first hostilities in the Civil War at Edgehill in October 1642. In January of the same year the King had ridden to the Commons demanding the impeachment of five hostile members of Parliament - he receded to York and the feeling grew that a clash was inevitable.

The Earl of Lindsey, who raised the soldiers at Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire would die at Edgehill. Sir John Hotham, then a Parliamentarian, would later collude with the Royalists.
