(x) Collections and Ranges
Documents group (3), comprising Appointment of Henry Barlow Maule as First and then Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, Feb. and Apr. 1855, both signed by Queen Victoria; and autograph letter signed Lewis "Lew" Wallace, lawyer, politician, soldier, Union General in the Civil War, Governor of the New Mexico Territory (1878-1881), US Minister to the Ottoman Empire (1881-1885). Wallace writes to B.F. Jones, Chairman of the Republican Nation Congress. He acknowledges receipt of the Committee's invitation to "take part in the canvass" and notes he will be at their service after taking care of some appointments. He believes he can be most effective working at home in Indiana, and ends saying "The situation looks promising in that part of the field". An interesting group.
