Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 309

ColombiaStampless Mail1863, Jan. 23. Entire letter from Naré to Bogotá, carried privately to Honda where it was dispatched, with greenish blue "Honda./Debe." oval handstamp, charged with "1" due marking in same colour, equivalent to 1 real, 10 centavos, to be paid by the recipient. After the first issue of postage stamps on 1.9.1859, only prepaid inland letters (not external mail) were accepted; however this entire was dispatched as postage due and it seems that, the "13" numeral marking in black, was applied to outstandingly remark that this mail was sent unpaid. The sender confirms inside that goods had arrived with the fluvial steamship "Mosquera" (this also carried the correspondence on the Magdalena River). An extremely rare unpaid mail in this period.
