Ferrovia Mendrisio-Stabio Confine. Certificato per una Azione al Portatore Fr. 100, Mendrisio, 1 Febbraio 1925, #073. The Mendrisio–Stabio railway was opened in 1926, as part of the international Valmorea railway. Ferrovie Nord Milano operated the Italian section of the line. However, only two years later, border-crossing was closed by the Italian government, which didn't agree with a privately owned international connection. The Swiss section remained active as a freight railway for the industries around Stabio. Since 1993, the line is also used by touristic trains of the Club del San Gottardo on the re-opened line to Malnate. A new branch, the Arcisate–Stabio railway, is currently under construction. It will connect Varese to Mendrisio, and therefore to Lugano and Como. EF.
