Auction: CSS75 - THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN COLLECTION PART III
Lot: 4070
Malaya and British Borneo, uniface reverse archival photo proof for an unissued $100, undated (1953), bird at centre, arms of member states along body of bird, DLR stamp 'DLR Studio Photographed 17 APR 1952' on reverse.
The name of the issuer (Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya & British Borneo) not engraved, but clearly a proposal for the new issue which appeared dated 1953.
By the same designer of the proposed $10 of this date.
A wonderful modernistic design, way ahead of its time, for the new issue of the Currency Board which ultimately appeared less than a year later, dated March 1953. One could speculate that the Singapore bird series of a few years later was inspired by this design and designer. For an absolutely unique item and highly important for the development of British South East Asian money.
Proposal by Thomas de la Rue.
