1843 (19 June) entire letter to "Messr Fred Huth & Co, London Care Messr Martin Young & Co, Bombay", "via Marseilles" and per "Zephyr". Bears "2/3" rate in black ink (1/- colonial, 5d. Mediterranean and 10d. French overland) with "INDIA" in oval applied in Bombay and straight-line "ship letter" in red applied in London (indicating that this was carried on a private ship from Calais to London), the reverse bearing London arrival c.d.s. (23.10). The flap also bears the senders details of G. Nye in Canton. An important letter which is believed to be the earliest mail from China applying the 1843 Anglo-French Convention rate which came into force on 1 June 1843. Photo

Offered with a full description of the routing of this letter as described by Lee Scamp in his book, describing a similar cover in his collection. The various delays this encountered meant that this cover took 126 days to be delivered instead of the usual 75 days
