York.R.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. P. Mandeville.), extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 280-320 Captain Pierce Mandeville served during the Great War with the 1/5th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment in the French Theatre of War, from 15.4.1915; he was killed in action 28.9.1916, the 1/5th Battalion as part of the 146th Brigade, 49th (West Riding) Division were serving on the Somme in September 1916, and on the 28th they were part of the attack on the Schwaben Redoubt, ´moved forward behind 7th Bedfordshire at 1pm. - War Diary records confused fighting in front and second line German trenches - ´hand to hand scraping´ - gains held and consolidated´ (British Battalions on the Somme, R. Westlake, refers); Mandeville is buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France.
