x Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, 16 July Boat Service 1806, Basque Roads 1809 (Richard Hilliard.), good very fine Estimate £ 3,400-3,800 Richard Hilliard served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Revenge, when twelve boats from Commodore Sir Samuel Hood´´s squadron cut out the French 16-gun corvette Cesar in the Verdun Roads, off the River Gironde, 16.7.1806; he later served as the same rate in the same ship for Lord Cochrane´´s successful destruction of a number of French ships, including four ships-of-the-line, in the Basque Roads, off St. Nazaire, 11-12.4.1809. Approximately 51 ´´16 July Boat Service 1806´´ clasps claimed. Richard Hilliard, born London; joined the Royal Navy, 1805, and was posted to H.M.S. Weymouth later the same year; served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Revenge, 1806-11; later service included in H.M.S.´´s Namur, Conway and Prince.
